Azerbaijani flag flies on world's tallest flagpole

The president yesterday hoisted a giant Azerbaijani flag in a ceremony at Baku's National Flag Square.

The 162-metre flagpole is the highest in the world. This was confirmed by the Guinness Book of Records on 29 May 2010.

President Ilham Aliyev laid the foundation stone for National Flag Square near the Naval Base in Baku's Bayil settlement on 30 December 2007.

Addressing yesterday evening's opening ceremony, President Ilham Aliyev said that 9 November would be marked every year as National Flag Day. He recalled that his late father, former President Heydar Aliyev, attached great importance to the Azerbaijani tricolor. 

The president was sure that the Azerbaijani flag would again fly over the Azerbaijani land occupied by Armenia. "After restoring its territorial integrity, our national, state flag will be hoisted on the occupied land. Our flag will fly in Nagorno-Karabakh, Khankandi, Shusha. We must use every moment to bring this day closer and that is what we are doing."

The president said that today Azerbaijan was developing rapidly and had taken its deserved place in the international community.

He said that Azerbaijan had a strong international profile and had proved itself a reliable partner for the world community. The president said that Azerbaijan would be become a donor country in a few years' time.

"Independence is the greatest wealth of our people and state independence is eternal," the president declared.

After the speech, the national flag was brought to the square. The president raised the flag as a military orchestra played Azerbaijan's national anthem.

A documentary film about the construction of National Flag Square and the role of the flag in establishing national solidarity was shown during the ceremony.

The event ended with a superb laser show and fireworks which could be seen across Baku Bay.

The 162-metre high flagpole has a diameter of 3.2 m at its base and tapers to 1.09 m at the top. The total weight of the construction in 220 tonnes. The flag is 70 m x 35 m and weighs 350 kilos.
