German company ALPINE recently received a construction order for a multifunctional arena in Baku, the company said.
A spokeswoman told the Eurovisionaz.com website that construction of the 25,000-capacity arena had already begun at the site at National Flag Square.
She said the concert hall would be one of three potential venues to host the Eurovision Song Contest in May. Commentators expect the Baku Crystal Hall to be the contest venue if it is completed on time.
As the main contractor, ALPINE is responsible for the planning and construction of the arena, while the other partners in the project are gmp International GmbH, Nüssli AG, Basler & Hofmann AG, seele austria GmbH & Co. KG and SSF Ingenieure AG.
The contract is evidence of ALPINE’s skills in the construction of stadiums and events venues and demonstrates the trust that Azerbaijan’s State Committee on Property Issues has in the company, the company said on its website.
ALPINE has built three football stadiums for the forthcoming EURO 2012 Championship in Poland, the Allianz Arena in Munich and the International Cricket Stadium in Dubai.
Nüssli AG was responsible for the construction of the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 stage in Germany, including camera gantries, commentary boxes, lighting, sound and the Green Room.
