Igbal Aghazadeh

Interview News.Az with Igbal Aghazadeh, a Milli Medjlis deputy and chairman of the Umid party.

Chairman of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan Sardar Calaloghlu said there is no political movement "For Karabakh and Republic" any longer. What can you say about this?

Initially, the parties agreed to take part in the elections as a single team within the movement "For Karabakh and Republic". But the opposition parties, represented in the movement, failed to keep their promise. The Umid party decided to take part in the upcoming municipal elections separately from other parties in the bloc.

As for the further destiny of the movement, it is now difficult to comment on this. Perhaps, we will hold sessions, or, perhaps, not. It is not a great significance right now.

Which actions does the Umid party take in connection with participation in municipal elections?

At present, we are specifying the list of candidates and selecting supervisors to arrange zonal sessions in regions. The party is planning to nominate candidates in most municipalities. The aim of such sessions is to raise the interest for municipal elections among the party members and see who of the party activists has greater chances to win in the elections. Our party participated in the repeated municipal elections in 2004, in parliamentary elections in 2005 and presidential elections in 2008. So, we have a good practice of participating in elections and we will spare no effort for success in these elections.

How do you assess chances of opposition in these elections?

I do not think that the opposition parties will gain success if they come out with different positions and pursue their personal ambitions.

What has caused a clash between the parties Umid and Musavat?

The proposal of the Musavat party to withdraw representatives from the Umid party from electoral commissions does not reflect the reality in full. The Umid party is sincere in cooperation with the opposition. We are ready to withdraw all our representatives in the electoral commissions but Musavat party should fulfill our demands, instead. Yet, the Musavat party prefers to accuse us of cooperating with the authorities thus creating an image of a just opposition.
