Ireli public union protests against the arrest of young Azerbaijani poets Shahriyar Hajizade and Farid Huseynov in Iran.

According to the news service for Ireli, as a sign of protest against the illegal detainment of poets, the organization adopted a statement to the spiritual leader of Iran, Ayatollah Hamenei.

The document fixes concern over the arrest of Azerbaijani poets, who were invited to the festival of poetry in Iran. The authors of the statement note that despite numerous appeals of the Azerbaijani side, Iranian authorities have not yet provided a reasonable information about the reasons of detainment of Hajizade and Huseyn.

'We are obliged to make an appeal to you over this unpleasant fact that damages the Iranian-Azerbaijani relations. This appeal does not serve any political motives but is rather a demonstration of sincere concern of the Azerbaijani youth', the statement reads.

The authors of the appeal stressed the old historical and cultural roots linking Azerbaijani and Iranian peoples, while voicing regret over the fact that definite circles recently take the steps aimed at sowing discord between the two countries.

Ireli has voiced bewilderment in the document over the arrest of two Azerbaijani poets on 2 May who were invited to the festival by the Iranian side.

The appeal contains a request to Ayatollah Hamenei to clarify the issues related to the further destiny of young Azerbaijani poets and promote their soonest release.
