The package of documents includes intergovernmental agreements on countering the legalization (laundering) of proceeds from crime and terrorism financing, as well as cooperation in the fight against the theft of cultural values and ensuring their return and cooperation in the fight against the illicit manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, ammunition , explosives and explosive devices. All of them were signed on August 28, 2012.
The documents provide for the exchange of operational, forensic, statistical and other information. The first agreement, in particular, makes it possible to meet requests for search operations. With regard to combating the theft of cultural property, it, among other things, provides for "appropriate measures" (in accordance with the national law) in respect of certain individuals, if there is reason to believe that they were involved in the theft of cultural property.
In addition, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Nicholas Melchenko explained, answering the question of MP Vitaly Busko, that these documents are closely related to the legal framework of the Customs Union. This applies to an agreement on cultural values. Thus, the spokesman for the Ministry of Internal Affairs has assured that the agreements do not infringe upon the interests of the Customs Union.
