Hidayat Orujov

Azerbaijan and the Roman Catholic Church have signed an accord regulating their legal relations.

The concordat was signed by the chairman of Azerbaijan's State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations, Hidayat Orujov, and the apostolic nuncio to Azerbaijan, Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti.

The agreement, which has eight articles, regulates the juridical situation of the Catholic Church in Azerbaijan and, among other things, guarantees the freedom to profess publicly and practise the Catholic faith as well as the right of the Catholic Church to organize and exercise its mission in conformity with ecclesiastical legislation.

At the same time it recognizes and registers the juridical person of the Catholic Church and all its institutions, ensuring free communication between the local Catholic community and the Holy See.

The accord also gives the Vatican the right to elect an Ordinary with responsibility for its ecclesiastical constituency in Azerbaijan. Finally, the concordat regulates the concession of residence and work visas to ecclesiastical personnel.
