English Premier League club Everton have confirmed they are to sign young Azerbaijani midfielder Araz Abdullayev.

The head of public relations at Abdullayev's current club, Neftchi, told Neftchi's website that Everton had sent a letter officially confirming their contract with Abdullayev.

Elnur Ashrafoglu said that the terms included provisions for the development of Azerbaijani football.

"The president of Neftchi FC, Sadiq Sadiqov, said that Araz Abdullayev's contract should include conditions about the development of Azerbaijani football as well as favourable terms for the player. We are delighted because Everton have confirmed these conditions too."

The only formalities left before Abdullayev can move to Everton on 1 January, during the next transfer window, are his British work permit and visa, Ashrafoglu said.

"Officials from the English club will visit Baku soon and the contract will be signed here in our capital."

Araz Abdullayev commented to the website: "I am proud that I will be an Everton player. I’m very grateful to the authorities at Neftchi for all they've done for me. I will do my best to be a good representative for Azerbaijan and Neftchi in England. I hope I can please both Everton and Azerbaijani fans."

The gleeful club spokesman could scarcely conceal his pride. "Neftchi is the best established football club in Azerbaijan and it's natural that the first Azeri to get the chance to play in the English Premier League should be a Neftchi player. It proves once more that Neftchi take good care of young footballers and that the footballing future of Azerbaijan is in safe hands."

Abdullayev is Azerbaijan's youngest ever international. He made his full international debut at the age of 16 but is better known for a spectacular goal he scored against Scotland Under-21s in March.
