Azerbaijani soprano passes away in Los Angeles

Sona Aslanova, well-known in Azerbaijan as a soprano on stage and screen, has died at the age of 86 in Los Angeles, California.

Born in 1924, Sona Aslanova studied opera singing at the Baku Conservatory where she later taught.

She sang in numerous live and recorded broadcasts on the radio and appeared in many films both as a singer and actor. Her best-known roles included Nigar in Koroglu, Asya in Arshin Mal Alan and Asli in Asli and Kerem.

All three operas were written by Uzeyir Hajibayli, who helped the young soprano as she began her career.

Sona Aslanova was awarded the title Honoured Artist of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.

After retirement, Sona Aslanova settled with her family in Los Angeles.

News.Az extends its condolences to the family of Sona khanim. The local community in Southern California will be informed about the funeral and related events.
