NATO accession is irrelevant for Azerbaijan today but this does not mean that the country won’t cooperate with the military bloc.

The statement came from head of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan, Farhad Mammadov speaking at the international conference ‘NATO’s role in forming geopolitical situation in the South Caucasus and beyond’ held in Baku on 4 April with the steering support of the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Azerbaijan and the Romanian embassy (NATO coordinator in Azerbaijan).

“The main aim of cooperation between Azerbaijan and NATO is army modernization, implementation of reforms, scientific cooperation, preparation of a military doctrine and introduction of NATO’s military standards in Azerbaijan”, F. Mammadov said.

He said Turkey’s experience plays an important role in cooperation with NATO because it is a strategic partner of Azerbaijan.

“Regional geopolitics shows that the attitude to military and political blocs determines the relations between regional countries”, Mammadov said.

“The issue of NATO accession is irrelevant for Azerbaijan today but this does not mean that we won’t cooperate with NATO”, he said.

According to the head of the center, the geopolitical role of NATO in the region envisages maintenance of the balance of powers and the regional countries views the bloc in this very context.

He noted that Azerbaijan has achieved great successes in ensuring the security of the energy vector of NATO and as part of fighting international terrorism.
