The third World Azerbaijani Congress passed several decisions at the end of its first working day.

The congress adopted an appeal to Azerbaijanis worldwide and foreign parliaments on the conflict with Armenia over Nagorno-Karabakh, Ali Hasanov, head of the socio-political department at the Presidential Administration, said.

The congress voted to reorganize the World Coordination Council of Azerbaijanis, abolishing the Presidium and replacing it with an Executive Secretariat.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev was re-elected chairman of the World Coordination Council of Azerbaijanis while Nazim Ibrahimov was re-elected chairman of the State Committee for the Diaspora.

The number of members of the  Coordination Council has increased from 107 to 115.

'United whole'

The congress shows that the Azerbaijani authorities and Azerbaijani people are a united whole, Ziyafat Asgarov, deputy chairman of parliament, said in his address to the forum today.

The Azerbaijani government and diaspora have a single position on all national issues and have no disagreements in any other areas, Asgarov claimed.

"The Azerbaijani state will continue to do its utmost to develop relations between diaspora organizations and give them support," the deputy speaker said.

Mikhail Gusman, first deputy general director of Russian news agency ITAR-TASS, described the congress as "as a very important event for Azerbaijan".

“The congress is very important from the standpoint of meeting diaspora representatives from all over the world and networking.

"One can tackle problems of the diaspora and in some ways help each other find a common solution. Therefore, the World Congress of Azerbaijanis is a great event both for the diaspora and Azerbaijan."
