A minor politicial party, the Strong Turkey Party (GTP), has created a Turkish-Armenian Friendship Society.

GTP leader Tuna Beklevic announced that the society had been set up to mark the first anniversary of the signing of the Armenian-Turkish protocols in Zurich,  according to Turkish media.

The organization’s goal is to reconcile the two countries and show their significance for each other.

Tuna Beklevic said that the society already had 500 members.

Beklevic hit the headlines on 10 October when the Turkish press reported that several Turkish politicians had crossed the Armenian-Turkish border over the River Araks. Tuna Beklevic stated that if the border remained closed until 2011, over 1,000 Armenians and 1,000 Turkish young people would cross the border this way. “We demand a positive response to the opening of the border from the Turkish and Armenian governments,” the GDP leader said.

The Russian Border Service told News.am that no-one had crossed the Armenian-Turkish border.
