Italy has signaled strong opposition to any move by UniCredit UniCredit to relocate its headquarters or key operations to Germany as part of its broader expansion strategy involving a potential takeover of Commerzbank.

Commerzbank officially rejected UniCredit's takeover bid on Monday, arguing that the Italian bank had not offered a premium to shareholders despite attempting to take control of the German lender.

German lender Commerzbank announced Thursday that it plans to reduce its workforce by approximately 3,900 jobs, representing around 10 percent of its total employees, as it faces mounting pressure from Italian bank UniCredit regarding a potential merger.
