U.S. posts $258.4B April surplus as tariffs kick

The U.S. federal budget surplus was $258.4 billion in April, ahead of expectations for $256 billion and up by 23% year-over-year (YoY).

A surplus occurs when an organization’s revenue exceeds its expenditures, News.Az reports citing foreign media.

Tariffs Help Drive U.S. April Budget Surplus

The U.S. received a boost in revenue from tax collection season and from an increase in customs duties. Customs duties totaled $16 billion in April compared to $9 billion a year ago.

For fiscal 2025 so far, or from October 2024 to April 2025, the U.S. has experienced a $1.049 trillion deficit.
