A volcano in the central Philippines erupted early Tuesday morning, releasing an ash plume that reached about 2.5 miles into the sky and prompting authorities to suspend school in four villages because of the ashfall.

Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos announced Friday that more than 45,000 residents have been evacuated from villages surrounding the active Kanlaon Volcano, which erupted on Monday.
