Spain is sending an additional 500 soldiers to fight wildfires that have ravaged dry woodlands amid a prolonged period of extreme heat, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced.
Portugal has extended its nationwide wildfire alert through Sunday as the country battles 37 active blazes, six of which are receiving the bulk of firefighting resources. The Interior Ministry said the fires show “no signs of letting up,” with more than 3,500 firefighters deployed since midweek.
Wildfires have affected several regions in western Japan, injuring at least two people, forcing dozens of residents to evacuate, and damaging several homes. Hundreds of firefighters have been working to contain the spreading blazes in the mountainous areas.
