World Aquatic Animal Day was founded in 2020 by people from the Animal Law Clinic at Lewis & Clark Law School (Portland, Oregon, USA) who wanted to draw attention to the importance of aquatic animals to our society and ecosystems.

An Azerbaijani delegation led by Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva, and including representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Committee on Urban Planning and Architecture, participated in the annual World Environment Day event organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Azerbaijan will continue to play a more active role in addressing global issues, Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration, said on X, News.Az reports.

Azerbaijan will host the World Environment Day in 2026, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme Inger Andersen has announced.
