The European Union has adopted new rules that allow it to suspend visa-free travel for non-EU countries more quickly if migration or security risks arise, as political pressure mounts to tighten border controls across the Schengen Area.

The European Council has approved sweeping new rules that make it significantly easier for the EU to suspend visa-free travel for citizens of non-EU countries, especially when serious human rights violations or diplomatic tensions arise.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday urged the EU to update the Customs Union and revise Schengen visa practices to boost economic and social mobility.

From 11 June 2024, there will be a rise in the fee charged for a short-stay visa in all Schengen states.
