India wheat output seen below record estimate

India’s wheat production for 2026 is expected to fall short of official projections, signaling potential pressure on supply despite a modest year-on-year increase.

According to the Flour Millers' Federation of India, output is estimated at 110.65 million metric tons—well below the government’s record forecast of 120.21 million tons, News.Az reports, citing Reuters.

The latest estimate still marks a slight increase from 2025 production levels, which stood at 109.63 million tons, but the gap with official targets has raised concerns within the industry.

As one of the world’s largest wheat producers, India plays a critical role in global food markets. Any shortfall in output can influence domestic prices, export policies, and overall food security.

The lower-than-expected estimate could complicate efforts to maintain stable supplies, particularly as demand remains strong and weather conditions continue to impact agricultural output.

With the final harvest figures yet to be confirmed, attention is now on whether production can improve—or if tighter supply conditions will persist in the months ahead.
