Pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. has announced a major partnership with Google Cloud to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities, with plans to invest up to $1 billion over the coming years.

Merck & Co. announced on Wednesday that it will acquire Terns Pharmaceuticals in a deal valued at up to $6.7 billion, as the drugmaker moves to strengthen its cancer treatment pipeline ahead of an expected patent expiry for its blockbuster therapy Keytruda.

Merck will lay off about 150 employees across its facility in North Carolina that manufactures its human papillomavirus vaccine, Gardasil, according to a notice filed in the state’s database this week.

Merck is reportedly no longer in discussions to acquire cancer drug developer Revolution Medicines.

Germany’s Merck KGaA has signed a major collaboration agreement with Boston-based Valo Health, tapping into the biotech firm’s AI-powered drug discovery platform to advance research in Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. The deal could be worth more than $3 billion to Valo, the companies announced on Thursday.

Merck announced on Wednesday that it will acquire the UK-based lung therapy company Verona Pharma for approximately $10 billion.
