The Republic of Mauritius has suspended all diplomatic relations with the Republic of Maldives with immediate effect, according to a communique issued Friday by the Mauritian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade.

U.S. President Donald Trump has launched a fresh attack on the United Kingdom’s planned Chagos Islands deal, just hours after the U.S. State Department signaled support for the agreement.

Mauritius’ Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced on Saturday that he has asked Central Bank Governor Rama Sithanen to step down, signaling a potential power struggle at the institution. The government plans to appoint a new second deputy governor on Monday, followed by a new governor.

On Thursday, Britain signed an agreement transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius in return for maintaining control over a strategically significant UK-US military base.

The High Court in London said it would examine Thursday the UK government's deal to return the remote Chagos Islands to Mauritius after imposing a last-minute block on the accord.

The UK has officially announced the relinquishment of sovereignty over a remote but strategically significant cluster of islands in the Indian Ocean after more than half a century.
