Rob Jetten was formally sworn in as the Netherlands’ youngest-ever prime minister on Monday, but faces an uphill battle as he leads a minority government that will require opposition backing to govern.

The Netherlands is set for new leadership after the centrist D66 party secured the most votes in Wednesday’s general election. The win positions 38-year-old party leader Rob Jetten to become the country’s youngest-ever prime minister.

The Netherlands will hold snap general elections on October 29, 2025, following the collapse of the ruling coalition triggered by far-right Party for Freedom leader Geert Wilders' decision to withdraw support.

The Dutch coalition government, led by Prime Minister Dick Schoof, collapsed on Tuesday after Geert Wilders, leader of the far-right Party for Freedom (PVV), withdrew his party.
