A fire aboard a South Korean Navy submarine undergoing maintenance has left one person missing, prompting an emergency response and ongoing rescue efforts.

One person went missing Thursday following a fire on a Navy submarine at a South Korean shipyard.

Hanwha Group’s Philly Shipyard has the capability to build nuclear-powered submarines for the United States Navy, a senior executive at the South Korean conglomerate said, signalling growing ambitions to play a larger role in America’s defence shipbuilding sector.

South Korean police and Labour Ministry officials raided the Hanwha Ocean shipyard in the southeastern city of Geoje on Thursday following the death of a worker.

At least one person is dead after a shooting Friday at Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Mississippi shipyard that builds vessels for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, police said. 

North Korean officials and shipyard workers have committed to completing the construction of a new navy destroyer warship by October 10 of next year, according to a report from the state news agency KCNA on Tuesday.

The Indian Navy has officially received the Tamal frigate from Russia, marking the fifth such warship built by the Yantar Shipyard under Project 11356.

A major fire broke out at the BAE Systems nuclear submarine shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, northern Britain, early Wednesday, according to local police.
