Military parade held in Azerbaijan

Military parade held in Baku on the occasion of June 26 – the Day of Armed Forces.

President of Azerbaijan, Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ilham Aliyev reviewed the parade in Azadlig square. State and government officials, guests, representatives of the diplomatic corps, war veterans, retired high-ranking officials, representatives of public also watched the parade.

It was said that 6 000 personnel, about 400 military vehicles, 60 weapons produced in Azerbaijan, 14 local military vehicles, 22 aircrafts, a lot of helicopters, warships are participating in the parade.

Defense Minister, Colonel-General Safar Abiyev reported to President that the troops are ready. Following this, State Anthem of Azerbaijan was played, the head of state made a speech and the parade started.

The state flag of Azerbaijan and flags of Azerbaijan’s Ground Troops, Naval Forces and Military Air Forces were first carried in front of the tribune.

Following this, marched the students of Military Lyceum named after Jamshid Nakhchivanski, Azerbaijan Higher Military School name after Heydar Aliyev, Higher Aviation School, Azerbaijan Higher Naval School, Training and Teaching Center of the Armed Forces, servicemen of Ground Troops, Azerbaijani Military Air Forces, Air Defense Forces, Naval Forces, five army corps of the Armed Forces.

They were followed by Azerbaijani Peacekeepers, troops of the National Guard, National Security Ministry, Civil Defense Troops of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, State Border Service and its Special Forces, Interior Troops of the Interior Ministry, Naval Forces’ marines wearing black.

Special Forces of the Defense Ministry marched in four columns. The united orchestra of the Armed Forces finalized the march of the personnel.

The parade of the military vehicles started following this. Motorcycle group moved ahead of the military hardware. Soldiers armed with PK machine-guns were on the motorcycle.

Military vehicles such as – Mercedes Benz, Hummer, BMC, UAZ, Land Rover Defender participated in the parade. Various models of Land Rover Defender vehicles and Cobra armored carriers bought from Turkey by Azerbaijan were demonstrated for the first time. Azerbaijani-produced Istiglal sniper rifle was also demonstrated on these vehicles.

Howitzers installed on various vehicles, multiple-rocket launchers, unmanned aircrafts and their mobile command-control systems (made in Azerbaijan) were demonstrated during the parade.

The most attractive hardware elements in the parade are air defense systems, which are a part of Azerbaijan Air Defense Forces’ arsenal. S-125 Pechora, S-200, for the first time S-300 PMU2 “Favorit” were also paraded.

Azerbaijani artillery was also paraded. Modernized BTR, BRDM carrier vehicles were paraded first, then followed “Matador” and “Marauder” anti-mine carrier vehicles, produced by the Ministry of Defense Industry jointly with “Paramount Group” company of the Republic of South Africa. 6 “Marauder” and 6 “Matador” carrier vehicles participated in the parade. Some of these transport vehicles were armed with weapons of local production. BMP model infantry combat vehicles, and “T-72” tanks finished the parade of military vehicles.

Following this, Military Air Forces started demonstration flights. MiQ-29, Su-25 aircrafts of Azerbaijani Military Air Forces, Mi-8, modernized Mi-24, newly-bought Mi-35 helicopters, Mi-171 and Ka-32 helicopters of the Ministry of Emergency Situations flew over the Azadlig square. Military aircrafts demonstrated air shows.

Warships, which cast anchor at Baku bay, supported the parade from the sea. “Bakili” frigate, the flagship of the Naval Forces, was in the center of the 16-ship group. The flagship was accompanied by trawl, gunship, landing ships of the Naval Forces, “Stenka” warships of Coast Guard of the State Border Service and two ships of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
