The European Commission has told Google it should allow third-party search engines to access its search data, as part of efforts to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Britain has designated Google as holding “strategic market status” in online search, marking the first use of new powers aimed at curbing the dominance of major tech firms. The move allows the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to compel Alphabet-owned Google to alter its operations in the UK search market.

Alphabet’s Google is being sued in the United Kingdom for up to £5 billion (approximately $6.64 billion), with plaintiffs accusing the tech giant of abusing its dominance in the online search market.

The European Union accused Google's parent company, Alphabet, of violating the bloc's rules regarding Google Search and Google Play, according to a statement from the European Commission on Wednesday.
