Russian forces advance near Sumy border, Ukraine says
Russian forces have intensified operations near Ukraine’s northeastern border, making a limited advance in the Sumy region, according to Ukrainian military officials.
A spokesperson for the Armed Forces of Ukraine said Russian troops are attempting to expand their control in border areas, particularly near settlements north of the region, News.Az reports, citing foreign media.
According to Ukrainian officials, the advance currently extends around 1 to 1.5 kilometres from the border in parts of Sumy Region.

While the territorial gains are relatively small, military authorities warn they are strategically significant, as they may signal efforts to establish a foothold for further expansion.
“Even such small distances are unpleasant,” the spokesperson said, noting the risk of gradual escalation.
Russian activity has reportedly intensified in multiple directions, with ongoing pressure also observed near Kharkiv and Lyman.
The developments suggest a broader attempt to stretch Ukrainian defenses across several фронт-line areas.
Ukrainian officials also accused Russian forces of using the recent Easter ceasefire period to regroup and reposition equipment.
Despite the declared truce, Ukrainian authorities reported continued attacks, including strikes on a medical vehicle in the Hlukhiv area and an evacuation group in Zaporizhzhia.
The situation remains fluid, with Ukrainian forces closely monitoring movements along the border and preparing for possible further advances.
Officials warn that even limited incursions could evolve into larger-scale operations if Russian forces manage to consolidate their positions in the area.
